The roots of terrazzo go back to the 15th century and to Venice, Italy. The construction workers of that period started to use the remains of marble in their own houses and barracks. The remaining pieces of marble were fastened with mud, dried and smoothed by hand. Over the centuries this flooring technology has evolved with new tools and techniques. However, the idea is still the same as the initial output.
Today’s terrazzo flooring combines the beauty of traditional art with modern developments such as epoxy resin and recycled aggregate. Selected color combinations of natural marble, recycled glass or plastic chips are placed in a pigmented cement or epoxy matrix and troweled onto a prepared concrete slab. The grinding and polishing process takes place in setting and drying processes that reveal the full color of the aggregates. Sealants can then be applied to provide additional shine and gloss.
